Cheung Chau Bun Festival
Description
The unique Cheung Chau Bun Festival (May 21-25) drew tens of thousands to the outlying island of Cheung Chau to experience an ancient thanksgiving ritual, enacted annually by the islanders. One of the highlights of the festival is the Bun Scrambling Competition, which took place on the final night of the celebration. During the competition, individuals and teams scuttled up a purpose-built tower to grab as many "buns" as they could. Another major focus of the festival is the Piu Sik (Floating Colours) Parade, where kids dressed up as deities and celebrities, seemingly floating in air. Lion and dragon dances added to the excitement during the Parade. The festival has been officially inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
